Day One    Page Two

This Week’s “Walking With Jesus” Reading
Recommendation:
During Your Devotions, This Will Give You Two Bible Chapters To Read Each Week.

I Just Want To Be Happy
Identifying Your True Goal
What most people mean when they say they just want to be happy is, they desire love, joy, fun, pleasure, peace, and freedom from pain. That is the actual heart’s cry of all humans; they are the things people REALLY want when they go out and involve themselves in life. You may not have put them in these terms or thought of them in this way; but, these are the things that are motivating your daily activities.

Identifying Your Method
One of the first things most people start doing is to pursue happiness using various METHODS that they feel will make them happy. Seeking happiness isn’t what can cause you problems; it is the method you choose for getting that happiness. That METHOD is what can either bring you happiness or can produce great pain and sorrow. This issue with choosing a method for finding happiness is what the Scriptural principles deal with in Devotions With Jesus.

Let Jesus help you take a look at one of the most popular philosophies that ends up trapping a lot of people.

Most people assume that pleasure
is the same thing as happiness.

Identifying Your Philosophy
Most peoples’ philosophy is, if it feels good, do it. From that point on, the person drops the goal of being happy and goes after pleasure. If they are doing something that makes them feel good, then they assume it is making them happy. This new philosophy then starts taking over all their methods, goals, plans and efforts. It becomes the “rule of thumb” by which they measure all the things around them.
I Just Want Pleasure
When pleasure is assumed to be happiness, you will start searching for and discovering those things that give your body and emotions pleasure.
  • Some people discover premarital and extra-marital sex, drugs and alcohol, possessions and money, wrong relationships, accomplishments and certain other of these types of activities.

  • Others get their pleasure from television, movies, magazines, books, the internet, texting, and various types of entertainment.

  • There are those who find pleasure in trying to be the best at something. They find sports, video games, education, business, work, careers, and various things that can provide them with competition. They want to be the best at these things and will find pleasure in winning at them.

Pleasure Isn’t The Same As Happiness
When you get pleasure from something, you can assume you have found happiness. It makes sense to you that sensations of pleasure are actually indications of happiness; however, you will soon discover that you can be experiencing all kinds of EXTREME pleasure and still feel very UNHAPPY.

You will discover you can talk to, have sex with, and even live with people and still feel lonely. You will find that you can go places and drink, do drugs, dance, laugh, talk, and seemingly have a great time and still wake up empty. You will soon learn that you can reach all your goals of having money, fun, pleasure, possessions, getting popularity, prestige, positions, and power and still feel lost. You will find out that pleasure and accomplishments ARE NOT HAPPINESS.

This concludes your study
for today.
Just spend some time
thinking and praying about
what you have read and
heard so far.
Let Jesus use these ideas
and principles to change
your life.
